Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery - What is the Difference

There is a marked difference between plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.  The difference lies in the fact that  plastic surgery, also known as reconstructive surgery, typically allows for repairing defective parts of the body. These irregularities might have been caused by congenital defects, trauma, injuries and even tumors, such as breast and skin cancer. Cosmetic surgery on the other hand is performed to improve looks and boost self esteem by rejuvenating or reshaping normal parts of the body.

You might be surprised to find out that numerous men are now opting for this type of elective surgery. One of the more popular operations for men is liposuction on the neck, which removes areas of fat around the neck and sculpts the area for a better appearance. Quite often, this is combined with a facelift or other type of facial procedure, such as liposuction under the chin. When asked for the reasons they want the surgery in the first place, many state it is related to their careers and view it as investing in them selves.

Many folks feel that we live in a beauty, youth fixated culture and that this type of surgical procedure is almost essential in order to be successful in both work and relationships. However, while plastic surgery maybe a viable choice for some, it might not be the choice of everybody. Each of us has a self image, a sense of how we believe we look to others. It has been demonstrated that individuals who are happy with their self image are more likely to be self confident, as well as more successful in both work and social situations. Those who are disatisfied tend to be uncomfortable, inhibited and less adept at holding their own in social situations.

As is the case with any specialized or general surgical process, you will need time to convalesce after the procedure. That time varies from one person to the next and largely depends on the form of procedure performed. In addition to allowing time for physical recuperation, there are also different emotional issues to consider. Many physicians say that the psychological aspects of liposuction cosmetic surgery together with the emotional recovery is usually something the patient has not considered and as such, they try to make sure to talk over this issue ahead of all surgeries.

Of course, there are umpteen reasons why someone may choose to have plastic surgery. However, there are things to consider and keep in mind prior to having a procedure. Surgeons can only work with what is there, meaning that they cannot mold someones looks as if they were made of clay. There are certain considerations, such as a persons general health, their age and skin texture. Doctors tell us another important consideration is the persons state of mind prior to the surgery. If they assume this is going to in some way make them beautiful and fix all of their issues, then they are very likely not a good candidate for this type of procedure.
